HERALBONY
Summer 2025

Artiste : SATO

Christmas Tree Shop

Since discovering watercolor painting at a summer camp at the age of 10, his daily routine has been to paint one picture a day at home. Without any specific model, he chooses a combination of several colors from a palette according to the image in his mind that day, and fills a large sheet of paper with a fresh touch reminiscent of jelly beans or raindrops. He prefers to use transparent watercolor paints made in the United States so that the hues do not become muddy. When someone who sees his finished painting tells him, "It's beautiful," he happily parrots back, "It's beautiful, isn't it?"

In her spare time, she enjoys Saori weaving, piano, and dance in art classes in Boston.

Artist: Momoko Nakagawa

Momoko

Born in 1996, currently living in Shiga Prefecture. Has been a member of Yamanami Studio since 2015.

At first, she wrote her own name, "Momoko," over and over again. But then she started drawing circles instead of names, as if she was enjoying the sensation of drawing. While smiling and humming a song, she layered circles over and over again using paints, ballpoint pens, and colored pencils, completing her colorful works, which seem to express her cheerful expression.

Artist: Takafumi Yamane

Title unknown

Born in 1996, currently living in Shiga Prefecture. Has been with Yamanami Kobo since 2015.

Originally reluctant to engage in creative activities, he began stamping as a way to do something that felt like a chore without feeling pressured. He would use stamps made of various materials, such as rolled-up cardboard, paper cups, and rubber stamps, and would choose his favorite color and carefully stamp each one. As he worked on it, he gradually freed himself from his aversion to creative work, and each time he completed a piece he felt a sense of accomplishment and joy, and his confidence in his creativity grew.

Now it has become an activity that the introvert can take up as a form of self-expression.

Artist: Iga Kanoru

After exhibiting at Art Brut Tachikawa in 2015, she started creating art in earnest. Using various art materials such as paints, pastels, and colored pencils, she creates collages and three-dimensional works using her own work as material. She also loves music and has been learning the cello for over 20 years. Although she has autism and is not good at conversation, she is interested in many things and has no hesitation in joining groups of people.

She served as the model for the 2023 HERALBONY key visual.

Artist: Kahoru Sugimoto

Title unknown

Born in 1979, currently living in Shiga Prefecture. Has been with Yamanami Kobo since 1998.

The first task she undertook when she started working at Yamanami was making paper using milk cartons. Her role in the process was to take the paper fibers and roll them into small balls in her hands.

Now, more than 20 years later, that task has disappeared and her activities have changed, but to her, work still means the act of rolling fibers with both hands. Now, the scope of her activities has expanded, and she uses paper cups to choose her favorite color and carefully stamps each one. The circles on the paper cups are stacked in various colors, resulting in a vibrant finish. For her, the act of rolling the clay into balls and stamping the balls constitutes work, and it is likely that this is what gives her a sense of accomplishment, fulfillment, and motivation.

à propos

HERALBONY

Stand out.

It means that it's not “normal.”
At the same time, I think that's a possibility.

We separate this world,
Go beyond the boundaries of preconceptions and common sense.

And various "uniqueness",
Delivering it to society in various forms,
We will create a new culture based on welfare.

Disability is not a deficiency,
Become a paintbrush

HERALBONY is an art lifestyle brand from Iwate Prefecture that aims to create new culture together with artists from welfare facilities both in Japan and overseas.
The unfamiliar word "HERALBONY" is a mysterious word that was written in a notebook by the older of the twin Matsuda brothers, the founders of the company, who is four years older than the older brother and has a severe intellectual disability and autism, when he was seven years old. These words may not have any meaning to the world. However, there was something that struck me, and that is why I wrote these words. These words are filled with the meaning of wanting to create value for the world by planning ideas that may seem meaningless at first glance.
