Background

Our approaches were different, but we were aiming for the same goal.

COTODAMA was born in 2016 as a speaker brand that uses technology to make the emotions and impulses within lyrics perceptible.

With the philosophy of "Living with Lyrics" (a life with lyrics, and living together with lyrics), we became the first Japanese company to win the SXSW Award in the US in 2015. In 2018, we were also selected for the Abbey Road Red incubation program in the UK.

Although their methods differ, COTODAMA and Heralbony have pursued the same goal with different approaches.
GR8, which continuously rewrites global culture, brought these two companies together this time.

Art

Rhythm of Ryo Nakao: Adding Color to the Sides

The speaker enclosure is wrapped in "Untitled," an artwork by Ryo Nakao (Yamanami Kobo / Shiga Prefecture).

Nakao was born in 1998. He started attending Yamanami Kobo in 2017 and began drawing. His inspiration came from imitating the staff's handwriting and tracing letters on windowpanes with his finger. From there, a world of only numbers and alphabets grew within Nakao.

He draws numbers from 1 to 14, layering them repeatedly and building up colors with acrylic paints and pens. It takes him about one minute to complete a single sheet. With an unhesitating hand, the numbers become color, rhythm, and eventually a single pattern. Looking at his work, one can sense the unique order within this repetition and layering.

Drawn to Nakao's art, COTODAMA proposed this collaboration, and his artwork now adorns the speaker enclosure.

Lyrics

The handwritten lyrics by Ryodaio's older brother, Shota Matsuda, add color to the song.

For this collaboration model, we implemented a handwritten font by Shota Matsuda, the older brother of Heralbony representatives Takaya and Monto Matsuda, as the lyric display font.

The lyrics, penned with someone's thoughts, shine through Shota's handwriting.

Artist

Ryo Nakao
Yamanami Kobo (Shiga Prefecture)

Born in 1998, Ryo Nakao lives in Shiga Prefecture and has been a member of Yamanami Kobo since 2017. He originally enjoyed cutting paper to make propellers for his beloved electric fans and watching them spin. However, seeing him imitate the staff's handwriting and trace letters on windows with his fingers, the staff gave him English newspapers, which he then copied onto drawing paper. This became the catalyst for him to start painting. He has created many works featuring not only English letters but also numbers. When he paints, there is no hesitation or doubt, and he finishes his pieces in an instant. The force and strength of his work are evident in the typography of the letters and numbers. He often traces over letters multiple times, changing colors and using brushes, pens, and sometimes even his fingers, which adds depth to his works. Recently, he has also created works depicting not only letters but also people and things he likes, and his unique sensibility, combined with his cool style, is reflected in his art.
