Photographs and drawings intertwine like a dialogue. Exhibition "Distant Closeness"
Good evening, I'm Marie from HERALBONY. The exhibition "Distant Proximity - The Universe of Ittetsu Matsuoka and Yamanami Kobo," featuring photographer Ittetsu Matsuoka and extraordinary artists, is currently being held at the HERALBONY LABORATORY GINZA Gallery in Ginza, Tokyo, until Monday, November 24th.

An exhibition project like an "exchange of letters" where photography and art intersect
This exhibition features works that photographer Ittetsu Matsuoka has compiled over many years, new photographs taken during his visit to Yamanami Kobo, a welfare facility in Shiga Prefecture, and collaborative works with artists belonging to the same facility.
The four participating artists are Rikuto Yoshida, Yuki Ino, Hiroya Oji, and NANA. The artists received Matsuoka's photographs, layered drawings on them, and returned their works as a "response," creating a dialogue between photography and painting, much like an exchange of letters.
Mr. Matsuoka's comment on this exhibition is wonderful, so I'd like to share an excerpt.
"They don't easily entrust their interpretation of the world to societal rules,
but rather reinterpret it in their own minds and then express it.
So their words aren't really words, they're like music,
their own unique language, which is hard to understand at first.
But once you get it, it's incredibly comfortable.
There's joy in understanding.
It was the same with everyone I met at Yamanami.
Each person truly lives in their own universe.
That's why it's difficult to understand at first.
But once you understand, it's fine.
Everything will be fine after that."

Rikuto Yoshida's current creative style was established when he casually doodled with a pen on a fashion magazine he happened to pick up. His style of freely and boldly applying colors with exquisite placement onto Matsuoka's photographs is truly unique.

Yuki Ino
This work by Yuki Ino seems to gently envelop students on their way to and from school with her drawings. Ino and Rikuto, who create their works next to each other, are great friends. When they visited the gallery in Ginza the other day, Rikuto told us that what is depicted in this work is a "house." What do you see?
